2009 CEWD Summit
October 7-9, 2009
Marriott Downtown Hotel
Indianapolis, IN
Dr. Kristina Johnson, Undersecretary
of Energy, and
Jane Oates, Assistant Secretary for
the Employment and Training
Administration/ U.S. Department of
Labor, addressed participants at CEWD’s
Annual Summit in Indianapolis Oct. 6-9,
2009.
Speaking to members
at a reception Oct. 6, Dr. Johnson noted
that as much as 60 percent of the energy
workforce is expected to retire in the
next five years, at a time when “we have
the least prepared students moving
through the pipeline.” To help better
prepare the workforce that will rebuild
our nation’s energy infrastructure, she
said, $100 million in federal grants was
being directed to energy training
programs.
Johnson said the
challenge and excitement of overhauling
our energy infrastructure by developing
Smart Grids, finding ways to reduce
carbon emissions and improving energy
efficiencies in the coming years could
help draw young people to the industry.
Speaking to Summit
participants by videotape Oct. 7,
Assistant Secretary Oates recognized the
work of state energy consortia and said
she was engaged in discussions with CEWD
about how the Administration could help
connect the energy industry to the
public workforce system across the
country.
“I am committed to
making sure that we connect our training
resources to good, high-paying jobs here
in the U.S. and your industry
exemplifies those opportunities,” she
concluded.
The Summit was full of informative
session by leaders in industry and
education. See below for videos
