CEWD members are diverse in geographic regions and size and represent public, private and government owned utilities. The membership also encompasses each of the major national utility associations Edison Electric Institute, American Gas Association, Nuclear Energy Institute and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
Edison Electric Institute is the association of United States shareholder-owned electric companies, international affiliates, and industry associates worldwide. Their U.S. members serve 97 percent of the ultimate customers in the shareholder owned segment of the industry, and 71 percent of all electric utility ultimate customers in the nation. They generate almost 60 percent of the electricity produced by U.S. electric generators.
American Gas Association, founded in 1918, represents 197 local energy utility companies that deliver natural gas to more than 56 million homes, businesses and industries throughout the United States. AGA's members account for roughly 83 percent of all natural gas delivered by the nation's local natural gas distribution companies. AGA is an advocate for local natural gas utility companies and provides a broad range of programs and services for member natural gas pipelines, marketers, gatherers, international gas companies and industry associates. Natural gas meets nearly one-fourth of the United States' energy needs.
Nuclear Energy Institute is the policy organization of the nuclear energy and technologies industry and participates in both the national and global policy-making process. NEI's objective is to ensure the formation of policies that promote the beneficial uses of nuclear energy and technologies in the United States and around the world. NEI has over 250 corporate members in 13 countries. They include companies that operate nuclear power plants, design and engineering firms, fuel suppliers and service companies, companies involved in nuclear medicine and nuclear industrial applications, radionuclide and radiopharmaceutical companies, universities and research laboratories, and labor unions. More than 6,000 industry professionals participate in NEI activities and programs, providing NEI broad industry representation and enabling NEI to focus industry expertise on crucial policy matters.
National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is a national service organization dedicated to representing the national interests of cooperative electric utilities and the consumers they serve. NRECA is an advocate for consumer-owned cooperatives on energy and operational issues as well as rural community and economic development. NRECA's more than 900 member cooperatives serve 39 million people in 47 states. Most of the 864 distribution systems are consumer-owned cooperatives; some are public power districts. NRECA membership includes other organizations formed by these local utilities: generation and transmission cooperatives for power supply, statewide and regional trade and service associations, supply and manufacturing cooperatives, data processing cooperatives and employee credit unions. Associate membership is open to equipment manufacturers and distributors, wholesalers, consultants and other entities that do business with members of the electric cooperative network. Midwest ENERGY Association is a consortium of energy industry organizations that connect their electric and gas field employees, corporate services and management personnel to pursue operational excellence to enhance customer and employee safety, productivity, and positive customer relations. MEA is one of the leading energy service organizations in the country. We serve over 250 companies in 15 midwestern states. MEA helps these members increase revenues and decrease operating costs through cooperative programs of information sharing, education, training and mutual problem-solving. MEA's members include 83 distribution companies, 4 transmission companies, 4 marketing companies, over 170 associate companies, and over 978 individuals. MEA also provides high value operations training to companies in all 50 states and 16 foreign countries. Northwest Public Power Association is an organization of over 150 public/people's utility districts, electric cooperatives, municipalities and crown corporations in the Western U.S. and Canada. NWPPA also serves the sales and networking needs of over 250 Associate Members across the U.S. and Canada who are allied with the electric utility industry. We are dedicated to serving the interests of our members and the millions of electric customers they serve. We provide training and education, public information, communication, federal legislative coordination, surveys, data and networking opportunities and products and services for the utility industry.
